“Judi Rever and the academic principles”
This month, the Rwandan genocide denier, Judi Rever, gave lectures at Flemish universities without an expert response. How does this fit within the academic principles of truth and honesty? By Jos van Oijen “The principles of truth and honesty are considered as fundamental to a community of scholars.” This motto can be found on the website of the Catholic University of Leuven in Belgium, one of the universities where the Canadian journalist Judi Rever from October 9 through October 12 was allowed to explain her revisionist theories about the genocide against the Tutsis. This is ironic, because very few Rwanda experts characterize …

‘In Praise of Blood’: Sensational, but does it fit with reality? by Jos van OIJEN
In her book ‘In Praise of Blood’, Canadian author Judi Rever controversially claims that not one, but two genocides were committed in Rwanda in 1994.[i] The first genocide nearly wiped out the Tutsi minority. A second one, secretly committed by the Tutsi dominated Rwandan Patriotic Front (RPF), allegedly targeted the Hutu majority. It’s a sensational story, but how well does it fit with reality? How well researched is it? Smokescreen Although Rever’s book is promoted as a groundbreaking piece of investigative journalism, the double genocide theory is not new. It was used by genocidaires in their trials, and is an …

Dutch University Slanders Genocide Hero
By Jos van OIJEN Wolfgang Blam saved lives during the genocide in Rwanda, while the rest of the world looked the other way. This hero is now depicted as a charlatan by students of VU University in Amsterdam. Twenty-five years ago, the ‘Innocence’-project was launched in New York, set up to help the victims of miscarriages of justice in America. Since then, hundreds of wrongly convicted people have been released. This success led to similar initiatives in other countries. An example from the Netherlands is the student project ‘Reasonable Doubt’ at the Vrije Universiteit (VU University) in Amsterdam. The most …
